Lapel is from the Old English word "læppa", used in the mid-17th century, meaning "skirt" or "clothes frill".
By the late 1860s, lapels were more commonly used on suits. At that time, the coat was no longer buttoned, but worn open, with the front-facing out and the collar turned out, which was an option for decoration and personalization.

Narrow lapel
The width of narrow lapels is less than 7cm. From the perspective of the current mainstream aesthetics of men’s clothing, narrow lapel suits may not be very popular. Many people don’t like too narrow lapels. Narrow lapels are not conducive to showing a masculine temperament.
In fact, in the 1950s and 1960s, narrow lapel collar suits were popular for a while, and this style was presented to everyone in the American drama "Mad Men" (Figure 2).
We named this type of suit Korean suit, thinking that this type of suit is more fashionable. However, even though the narrow lapel collar is very fashionable, business people still have to choose carefully. For business people who are pursuing safety and generosity, it is best to choose the regular lapel width, and casual suits can choose the narrow lapel style.

Conventional lapel
Most of the conventional lapel widths are 7-11cm. The relatively standard lapel width is the most common classic style in suits. It is the most in line with modern aesthetics and is a relatively safe choice. It is more conservative, mature, and fashionable enough, and is very suitable for business people. Or people who don't wear suits very much, it is a lapel width that can be used for leisure or business, and it is suitable for a wide range of occasions.

Wide lapel
The wide lapel is above 11cm. Compared with narrow lapel suits, wide lapel suits can play a role in modifying the face shape. In recent years, wide lapel suits have become more and more popular. This kind of wide lapel was all the rage in the 1920s and 1930s, and it is very common in many gentleman's clothing pictorials and Hollywood star photos. However, in the aesthetics of the modern public, the acceptance of too-wide lapels is not high. Most of them think it is a bit outdated and old-fashioned. If you are not a fan of retro gentry clothes, it is still not recommended to choose this ultra-wide lapel. In other words, wearing this kind of suit, you need to bring style yourself to support the suit.
In fact, when others say the width of the lapel, 7.6cm, 8.3cm, etc. are just a number, and only the visual and upper body feelings are the most intuitive.
There are many choices of width, the most important thing is that you think it is harmonious, and in line with your overall temperament, as long as you are comfortable.
Another thing is that the width of the lapels should also match the body shape. People who are big and strong are better to have wide lapels. There is no big requirement for the width of lapels for thin people. Just choose according to your preference.

The height of the gorge is different, which is related to the number of buttons and the width of the lapel. In addition, it can be said that there are differences in the height of the lapel. Generally speaking, the British traditional suit lapel is slightly lower, but the high lapel will give an upward feeling, and the position can better set off the head and neck, and it will also have a higher visual feeling.
