The Impact of Canvas on Suits

The canvas used in suits is a material between the suit fabric and the inner lining. It can be one or several layers and acts as the structural skeleton of the suit. With the support of lining, different parts of the suit can achieve various styles.

In general, the functions of suit canvas can be divided into six types:

1. Achieving the desired shape for the suit

Using stiff and elastic canvas can help the suit maintain a crisp shape without affecting the feel and style of the fabric. For example, a composite chest canvas can make the chest area full, and canvas at the shoulders and sleeves can give a more three-dimensional shape.

2. Improving wrinkle resistance and strength

Using canvas in the collar and front closure areas not only keeps the suit flat without wrinkles but also protects and strengthens the fabric from extreme stretching or wearing.

3. Maintaining a clear and beautiful folding edge for the suit

Using canvas at the folding edge of the suit, such as the lower hem, back vent, vent closure, cuffs, and sleeve vents, can make the folding edge straight and clear, and the style more attractive.

4. Keeping the stable structure and size of the suit

After using stabilizing canvas on curved or slanted parts of the suit pieces, such as collar notches and sleeve caps, the structure and size of the suit can be more stable.

5. Increasing the thickness and warmth of the suit

Adding canvas to the suit increases its thickness, especially if the front and chest canvas or for the whole body is used. While thickness doesn't necessarily mean warmth, natural fibers and canvas materials that provide good insulation can improve the suit's warmth.

6. Improving suit-making processing

Thin woolen fabrics, soft silk fabrics, or slick lining fabrics can be difficult to handle during sewing processes, such as pocket openings and embroidery. Canvas critical areas can solve such problems and greatly improve the processing efficiency and accuracy of the suit.
